FOREST STAND IMPROVEMENT AND WETLAND ASSESSMENT AT THE TOWNSEND BOMBING RANGE

EAS is performing forest stand improvement activities and producing a wetland assessment for Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Mid-Atlantic at Townsend Bombing Range (TBR) in Townsend, Georgia.  To support the natural resources program at TBR, EAS is preparing land for planting and installing firebreaks across a 15-mile perimeter to prevent the spread of wildfire, protect young pine stands, and aid in the prescription burning program.  Once complete, EAS will plant over 400 acres with pine seedlings.

EAS will assess more than 30,000 acres of wetland habitat, utilizing past wetland surveys and assessments, ground-truthing, and GIS mapping to affirm the footprint, classification, and function of wetlands at TBR.  The final wetland assessment report will aid TBR’s Natural Resource Management team in future planning and ensure continued compliance with the Clean Water Act and Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan (INRMP).
